Waiting for the punchline
October 1, 2009 8:57 am Culture, PersonalWhen I was in high school, MTV premiered a new comedy series called The State. A bunch of my peers loved it, but I couldn’t stand it. I thought the sketches were horrendously stupid, and couldn’t find anything funny in it. This new style of “comedy” appeared again when I was college; this time, it was Comedy Central’s Upright Citizens Brigade. It was another dumbass sketch show that I found insulting to my intelligence. I may not be an Einstein, but I don’t consider myself to be a slack-jawed idiot, either.
Shows like Reno 911! and Aqua Teen Hunger Force continue this lunacy; they’re not sketch shows, but they’ve got the comedic level of a sea slug. I don’t know if they’re meant to be rebellion against mainstream or traditional comedy, or something else entirely, but these futile attempts at laughs are absolutely horrible. My eyeballs twitch just thinking about them.
I know I’m considered to be out of touch with most mainstream culture (I enjoy thinking for myself, thanks), but I can’t be the only one who rolls his eyes at this crap.
